A hidden camera experiment was conducted to see if most people conform to the behaviors of others. The goal was to see if a woman (who was being monitored without her knowledge) would stand up at the sound of a tone simply because everyone else stood up. Surprisingly, after just 3 rounds of witnessing others stand up at the sound of the tone, she conformed perfectly to the group without even knowing why.
Jonah Berger of the University of PA explains that this internalized form of behavior is part of social learning which starts at a very early age. Conformity not only effects how you act, but similar forces are subconsciously shaping the way you think.
In the words of Maya Angelou, if you’re always trying to be normal, you’ll never know how amazing you can be. Break from the norm and be free.
